When I started taking this class, I was not sure if my skills would improve very much. I have taken photography classes before and knew for the most part how to operate a camera in manual mode. However, this class reminded me of dozens of composition techniques that I had long since forgotten, and cleaned up my skills working in manual. Above is an example of how my photography has improved. The first photo was on the first day of class, and it is clear that I was not very sure how to properly set up the photo. In the second photo, I am using manual mode to highlight the subject, and I set the photo up in a way that makes it pleasing to the eye and removes distractions. I used to think that the plant pictured was a little boring and wouldn't make a good photo--there was no color variety! But after this class I have been able to take this plain plant and turn it into a quality photo.

For this assignment we photoshopped pictures to create a pun. We also chose two words and made a picture to define them. This assignment gave me lots of practice working with different layers on photoshop. It was a very unique assignment because we got to use a lot of creativity as we made them. It posed a challenge because I had to work hard to make sure my ideas were shown clearly. Answers to puns: emotional baggage, the keys to happiness, just in case
For this assignment, I decided to take pictures of plants at the school and at my house. I focused on making the subject stand out from the rest of the photo and getting the correct exposure. Shutter Speed -1/1600 Aperture - f4.5 ISO - 100 This assignment gave me more practice working in full manual mode. It posed a little bit of a challenge because at first it was really bright outside but I did not want to close the aperture. A little later, it was difficult because it was very windy outside.
For this assignment we took portrait photos in a photo studio and around the school with a bounce light. This assignment gave me practice working with studio lights and bounce lights. I also got more photoshop practice when assembling the final photo.
For this assignment, I decided to take photos of my dog. I focused on trying to make him the main subject of the photo and blurring out the distractions in the background. Shutter Speed: 1/80 Aperture: f4.5 ISO: 800 No edits made This assignment gave me more experience working in Manual. It was good practice because my dog was not sitting very still and it was a little dark when I took the photos, so it was difficult to get the correct exposure. I also worked to edit some of the photos, boosting the exposure and erasing some things from the background.
For this assignment we found photoshop tutorials of our choice and followed them. I chose to follow one tutorial to make a reflection in the water, one to make my picture appear as polaroids, one to add color to only one part of a picture, one that taught three different filters, and one that taught me how to add a border around a picture. I learned a lot in this assignment, including lots of working with different layers at once. I also got practice following tutorials so it will be easier in the future.
This week I chose to take some of my old photos and turn them black and white. I focused on experimenting with different saturation and hue levels without making the pictures boring. Shutter Speed: 1/200 Aperture: f4.5 ISO: 100 This assignment gave me practice with adjusting hue and saturation in Photoshop. I also experimented adding color to just one part of the photo but did not choose to include any of those. Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment.
For this assignment we used the tripods to take multiple photos of one subject in the same location, then photoshopped the pictures together to make multiple of the same subject. Doing this assignment taught me how to work with multiple layers and the photomask tool. I also got more practice working in manual mode when I took the photos.
This week I chose to take close-up photos of the flowers outside the school. For this assignment I focused on exaggerating the details in the flowers and blurring the background to remove distractions. I also worked with the macro feature on the camera. This assignment was good practice for me because I continued working with adjusting the ISO. I also had to frequently change the shutter speed because it was so windy outside. Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment.
For this assignment we took photos around the school and used Photoshop's Photo Merge tool to turn the photos into panoramas. This assignment taught me about the Photomerge feature, which I had never heard of. It also taught me a lot about how to use tripods.
